Chinese carriages being put through test runs

New railway compartments imported from china have been put in to a test run. 100 such railway carriages are to be brought down to Sri Lanka from china. Of this 25 compartments were received by the railway authorities.

New Chinese railway compartments have been put in to a test run from Maradana railway station to Polgahawela to inspect its railway line worthiness. Technical aspects including brakes have also been tested.

The acting general manager of Sri Lanka railways P. P. Wijesekera told rupavahini that these new railway carriages were highly suitable to operate on local railway lines. It was built by using steel and with new technology. It has a seating capacity of 100 and its length is 65 feet. The value of a railway compartment is 25 million rupees. 25 new railway compartments with air brakes will be put in to operation with in next week.

Transport minister Doulas Alahapperuma says that these railway carriages were imported on a concessional loan granted by the chinese government with the aim of providing an efficient transport service for local commuters.
