Trains to Vavuniya again
The train service from Medawachchiya to Vavuniya was resumed last Thursday after the Defence Ministry gave security clearance.
The government had suspended the railway service from Medawachchiya to Vavuniya following the deteriorating security situation in the area and fears that attacks may be carried out on commuters. It was also believed the train provided easy access for attackers to reach Colombo .
However last week the Railways Department said it was re-starting the service.
Security sources in the Government Railways Department told The Morning Leader that the department had its own security personnel to safeguard the passengers and checking the baggage and parcels within the trains. The sources however said the railway security personnel were not specially trained individuals, unlike in the forces.
However to ensure the safety of commuters the three armed forces are also assisting the railway security in providing security to rail commuters.

“President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed that the passenger train service to Vauvniya be restored.
He made this directive following a discussion with TULF Leader V.Anandasangaree yesterday (04th) at Temple Trees.”
Very good news to read but to experience it has to be implemented. When inquiries were made at the Vavuniya railway station they are surpriced to hear the news and say they have no information that arrangements for recommencing the train service are being made.
It is humbly requested that this information be brought to he notice of EVERYONE concerned so that His Excellency’s order is carried out with the least possible delay in the interest of the Vavuniya passengers. The public may kindly be informed of the correct position.
This is further to my earlier comments.
