Seven out of the ten class M9 Alstom railway engines that the Sri Lanka Railway (SLR) bought in 1997 from France are now out of order and the SLR lacks funds to repair and put them back into use.

SLR bought these railway engines at Rs. 20 million each amidst criticism from engineers. The engines cost more because of the required maintenance.

SLR Technical General Manager D.D. Wijesekara said the engines can be repaired and put back into use once the necessary funds are received.
