Ratmalana Yard gutted by fire
A major fire broke out today on the grounds of the Ratmalana Railway Yard (Mechanical Engineering Department Yard) located opposite the Ratmalana Domestic Airport. The department said that rolling stocks that were brought to the yard for repairs as well as some spare parts were damaged in this fire accident.
The fire that began around half past 11 this morning raged on for hours before it was brought under control this evening by the Railway Fire Units with the help of the Dehiwala – Galkissa Fire Brigade and the Air Force Fire Brigade.
While the cause of the fire has not been ascertained so far, the department has begun its investigations to establish how the fire broke out.
The grounds of the Ratmalana Railway Yard & Workshop are very poorly maintained and a disaster of this kind was just waiting to happen. The extensive five acre Ratmalana Yard looks like a semi jungle with heavy bush and scrub covers.
