More stations on Batticaloa line
A train service between Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa not operated in the last few years due to terrorist activity, will be re-commenced by the Government under the Nagenahira Navodaya programme.
Fulfilling another pledge in the Mahinda Chinthana to upgrade infrastructure facilities like transport in the liberated areas, this step would vastly cater to the community needs of the Eastern Province.
This project is another transport sector endeavour which would benefit railway commuters.
A Transport Ministry spokesman said the new railway station in Rideethanna between Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa was opened recently.
The Ministry has invested Rs. 2 million for this station.
He said commuters travelling by train on the Batticaloa line were deprived by the lack of stations. “Stations have been restricted for major cities,” he said.
Foundation stones to construct another two new stations in Vandaramulla and Aselapura have been laid by the Minister to provide a better railway service to people in liberated areas.
The estimated cost would be Rs.6 million for two stations. He said that the railway line from Colombo to Batticaloa has been neglected. Terrorists have destroyed the railway line by removing sleepers as well.
“We are in the process of renovating and restoring the main Batticaloa Railway Line by revamping the stations located in the line,” he said. The Railway Department will upgrade these stations as attractive, clean and safe places.
