Couple struck by train in Wellawatta
A young couple who were walking along the rail tracks in Wellawatta were struck by a train last afternoon. The girl was killed on the spot.
The couple were reportedly hit by a Galle bound train at around 3.30pm, in the Beach Wadiya area of Wellawatta.
According to Wellawatta police, the couple had not heard the whistle of the train. The train had struck the girl from behind and then run over her.
The body was removed to the Kalubowila hospital morgue. Wellawatta police recorded a statement from the boy, who had survived the accident.
