Nearly 1,500 employees in the Railway Department who had not been made permanent for the past 15 years will be absorbed into the permanent cadre. The appointment letters will be given by Minister Dullas Allahapperuma at the National Youth Services Council in Maharagama today.

The Minister told the Daily News these 1,500 employees of the CGR have been absorbed to the permanent cadre.

They have been disregarded by eight previous Transport Ministers for the past 15 years as well.

These employees worked on contract and substitute basis in the CGR. They had fulfilled their qualifications for permanency.

Minister Allahapperuma said these 1,500 employees have been absorbed to the permanent cadre without considering any political affiliations.

“It is difficult to improve train services unless we solve administration problems,” he said.

“Trained and skilful workers are needed to implement a satisfied service to commuters,” he said.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to President Mahinda Rajapaksa who was personally involved in this matter by discussing with the Treasury to release the necessary funds for payment of salaries,” he said.
