Dallas ready to clean up CGR

Transport Minister Dallas Alahapperuma said he was ready to work as a sanitary worker, and did not mind working as an assistant to an engine driver, pointsman or a guard in order to improve the CGR.

Speaking at a function to give permanency to 1,500 employees of the CGR, he said the CGR had become a big burden to the Treasury and it was the duty of all workers to improve the department irrespective of cast, creed and religion. Minister Allahapperuma said that some anonymous posters had been put up on street walls accusing him of not fulfilling his promises. He had not given any promise to anyone during the tenure of 14 months in office. He had not given any promise to anyone 8 years ago when he was getting ready for election. He had not given any job to anyone until now.

He pointed out that nobody should bother to prompt him to solve the workers’ problems because he was well aware of all the problems that the workers of the CGR. When making the employees permanent he did not consider a person’s nationality, religion and political affiliations. This was a historic occasion because the highest number of CGR workers were made permanent for the first time in Sri Lanka.
