The plight of short distance commuters
Twenty new rail bus routes are to be started – splendid show!
Vehicles aplenty should also guarantee good driving. The “D” type smaller buses for the short routes promised last year, long before this rail-bus endeavour, have still to be allocated. These short distance commuters have been waiting in patience and suffering for decades.
Many are the cases of travellers using the main highways from Colombo to the south, being deposited on the wayside at all hours, who band themselves together, to share tri-shaw fares for the last lap to get to their homes.
What about the short routes within the greater Colombo area? Maligawa Road, opposite the De Soysa flats, Katubedde, catering to the big Nelumpura housing complex, have only small “baby” buses, which do a morning run and an evening trip, leaving the people always guessing.
