The Badulla bound Colombo night mail was derailed near Galaboda today. The derailment that occurred around 2:20 AM has resulted in all train services on the upcountry railway line coming to a standstill. Sources say that seven carriages of the Badulla bound night mail were derailed in the incident.

The Railway Control Room says that all train services on the upcountry line are currently restricted to Nawalapitiya, and they further said that the repair crews are currently working on fixing the damaged railway lines and the train services should be back to normal shortly.

Train derailments and breakdowns are fairly common on the upcountry line due to the cash strapped Railway Department neglecting the much needed maintenance.

Update: The damaged line has been repaired and the trains are running as usual as of 12.04.2008.
