Matale train derails near Katugastota
The Kandy bound Matale train was derailed near Katugastota this morning around 06:15. No major injuries were reported due to today’s derailment, while some people did suffer from some minor injuries. The Railway Control Room says all train services on the Matale line are suspended until further notice. Railway repair teams are currently working on the derailed line to rectify the damages.
The Matale railway line is unballasted and very poorly maintained irrespective of the fact that this is the lifeline for hundreds of workers and schoolchildren. Due to the poor maintenance and damaged slippers used on this line, derailments such as this occur on a regular basis.
