Residents ask for flyovers over crossings
The residents of several areas in the Kurunegala district stressed the need to erect flyover bridges to prevent accidents at the railway level crossings.
The level crossings near the Polgahawela Railway station and at Mutthuwegala create obstructions to traffic on the Kurunegala –Kegalle road and Kurunegala –Dambulla road.
The promises of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and several ministers to erect a flyover bridge for Yangalmodara level crossing where a fatal train-bus accident claimed 46 lives and caused serious injuries to several others are yet to be fulfilled.
The rail gate near the Polgahawela railway station is closed at short intervals to allow the passage of 84 trains that arrive and leave Polgahawela railway station causing obstructions to traffic in the Kurunegala –Kegalle main road.
Muttetuwegama level crossing on the Kurunegala-Dambulla road is a severe obstacle to the transport of patients from the North- East to Kurunegala and Colombo. Very often the ambulances carrying the injured from the operational areas are held up at Muttetuwegama railway level crossing.
