Railway strike from midnight today – Updated
Update: A UFRTU official said that Railway unions have called off the planned strike from midnight today after discussions with the Transport Minister over salary and other issues. All train services will be operating as usual tomorrow.
The United Front of the Railway Trade Unions (UFRTU) has decided to lunch a token strike from midnight today after discussions held with Transport Minister Dullas Allahapperuma over certain issues had failed.
The UFRTU had put forward five demands to the authorities. “The main problem it the need of a salary hike”, the Secretary of the union Sampath Rajitha said. The Transport Minister wanted another forty-seven days to solve the problems of the railway employees. Even if the Minister is keen to settle the matter the railway authorities stand in the way, he added.
Employees from the Technical, Technology services divisions and carriage examiners are to participate in the token strike. The UFRTU said the strike would disrupt day-to-day railway activities.
