Train commuters are to be saved from the usual hassle experienced in reserving seats in intercity trains, with the Railways Department deciding to launch a system of reserving seats via mobile phones.

According to General Manager of Railways Lalithasiri Gunaruwan, the new reservation system would enable the public to book seats in trains using the Short Messaging System (SMS).

He said the new system will first be used for the Kandy-Colombo train service. Meanwhile, the Department is also mulling a project to provide train commuters with facilities to use the Internet in the course of their journey.

The GMR said the facility will be available to commuters travelling in first and second class carriages, and in the observation saloon.
