Sri Lanka Railway paid Rs 10,000 to the families of each of the school children who died when the Matara bound express from Anuradhapura “Rajarata Rejina” was derailed at the Thotagamuwa bridge in Hikkaduwa, as funeral expenses.
The money was handed over to the next of kin of the victims at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

The Katugastota Police last week reported that train No. 2243 bound to Matale from Kandy had derailed near Mawilmada railway level crossing in the Katugastota police area due to the bad state of the railway sleepers. No one had suffered injuries.

Steps to upgrade train service

Most of the 100 railway compartments imported from China have already been deployed in the service, General Manager of Railways, Dr. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan said.
