Train services resumes on coast line
Train services on the coast line which returned to normalcy following Monday’s freak accident on the Thotagamuwa Bridge near Hikkaduwa, are to resume today.
Three passengers, including two school boys were killed and twelve passengers injured when the Vavuniya – Matara express train derailed, causing the three coaches in the back of the train to topple over.
General Manager Railways, Dr. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan said restoration work was proceeding at good pace. He said a train to Matara could be run by noon today adding trains could be run only up to Ambalangoda following the accident.
Dr. Gunaruwan said a four member technical committee had been appointed to probe the accident headed by Operations Superintendent Nalaka Bandara. The other members of the committee are Chief Mechanical Engineer S.M. Abeywickrama, Chief Signal and Telecommunications Engineer D.G.Hemachandra and Chief Way and Works Engineer, A.G.Mahanama.
The committee is expected to submit its report in two weeks, he added.
