Upgrading the railways system with new infrastructure facilities, the Ceylon Government Railway has extended the Railway ’signalling system’ up to Matara, replacing the old system of ‘exchanging tablets’.

The new system is introduced to ensure control of railway traffic safely, said General Manager of Railways, Dr. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan.

The system will be maintained through a central unit.

The Department of Railways has taken measures to develop the railway communication system on coastal lines with modern facilities. Forty trains in the coastal lines would be inter-connected under this advanced communication system enabling the exchange of messages in times of emergency.

Under a triangular program, a separate signalling system has been installed between Kandy and Peradeniya to increase the capacity of the traffic. As the initial step, Gelioya, Pilimatalawa, Peradeniya and Kandy will be brought under this signaling system.

As of now 260 km on the coastal lines and 1200 km on the other lines are under this integrated signalling system.
