Railway colour light system extended
The colour light signal and communication system of railways has been further extended at a cost of Rs. 3 billion, Transport Minister Dulles Alahapperuma said yesterday.
“On the coast line, colour light signals have been installed up to Matara and are controlled by the main centralized control panel at Maradana. Colour light facility is available up to Negombo on the Chillaw line and up to Rambukkana on the main line,” Minister Alahapperuma said.
Steps have also been taken to provide communication sets to trains to prevent diasters similar to the one that occurred at Telwatta during tsunami in 2004. A special colour light signal system will be set up between Kandy and Peradeniya to increase the speed between the two stations. Accordingly, colour light signals will be provided to Geli – oya, Pilimatalawa, Peradeniya and Kandy railways stations, he said.
Under the ‘Colour Lights and Communication Development Project’ 1200 kilometers of railway line including 260 KM. on the coast line had already been provided with centrally controlled colour light and communication systems, Minister Alahapperuma said.
