The Railway Department yesterday blamed the security personnel and the General Manager, Operations for the delay in clearing railway tracks for train movements after they were damaged due to bomb explosion.

There were long delays in train movements even on Thursday when a minor explosion slightly damaged the rail track near the Mt. Lavinia station on Wednesday.

The train service was totally paralysed on the Chillaw line yesterday morning following another explosion near the ‘Black Bridge’ in Wellampitiya on Thursday night which caused minor damages to the railway track.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, the GMR Dr. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan said the failure on the part of the security establishments and the GMO to take prompt action had led to the delays.

“The rail track cannot be repaired without the security clearance and the GMO’s report. We are waiting for them to give us the green light to start restoration work on the rail track,” GMR told the Daily Mirror when he was contacted on the issue last morning.

Affected commuters, who were mainly city workers said that they had to wait for hours for trains as the services had not yet been brought to normal.

meanwhile two suspects were taken into custody in connection with the bomb explosion in the railway line near the Black Bridge at Wellampitiya on Thursday night.

Police Media Spokesman, SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said the investigating team is awaiting the Government Analyst’s report for further inquiries.
