Driver races to death

An attempt by a three-wheeler driver to race against an oncoming train and pass the gate at a railway level crossing at Kandewatta, Ambalangoda ended in tragedy.  The three-wheeler was hit by the Colombo bound ‘Samudra Devi’ train killing the driver on the spot. Residents of the area rushed to the scene but the driver was already dead.

Ambalangoda police who conducted inquiries into the incident said the driver had driven his vehicle on the grass verge of the road in his attempt to pass the level crossing when the gate was closed.

The victim Sudath Udawatta (26) was a resident of Randombe in Ambalangoda.
