No protection for railway property
The protective wall around the railway line near the Panadura railway station, which developed a crack when a caterpillar hired by the UC to clear a garbage mound nearby knocked against it, collapsed during the recent rains.
A senior official of the Railway Department pointed out that dirt water flowing from the dumping ground into the railway yard is now causing serious damage to motor points, electronic circuits, and track terminal boxes of the railway signal system. He said when the underground cables come into contact with the filthy water they develop oxide corrosion that results in signal failures.
Meanwhile a senior official of the Railway Building Inspector’s Office, Moratuwa said the UC is responsible for the collapse of the protective wall, but the department is compelled to repair it to prevent any possible damage to the underground cables. He said the prevailing shortage of cement held up repairs.
