Union demands immediate resumption of railway canteen service
The All Ceylon Railway Employees’ General Union urged Railway authorities to open the railway canteen service which were suspended for renovations. The Union said the suspension of the canteen service has caused great inconvenience to commuters.
Tenders have been called for renovating the canteen service but no finality has so far been reached.
General Secretary of the All Ceylon Railway Employees General Union, Sumathipala Manawadu said yesterday that it would be convenient for commuters if the canteen service is maintained in view of the school vacation commencing on December 5 and the holiday season “We are aware that the authorities wish to renovate and refurbish the canteen to provide a better service. But we feel the timing is wrong as train travellers would increase during the holidays,” he said.
They urged the authorities to postpone the renovations for the time being- possibly till the end of December. Manawadu said it would be an act of goodwill towards holiday makers.
