Batticaloa trains being stoned by unknown people
Trains operating on the Colombo-Batticaloa line are stoned on a regular basis at a particular point along the line, the SLMC told parliament yesterday.
SLMC MP Hassan Ali said the eyesight of a teacher travelling by train had been affected after being struck by a stone during one of those attacks.
Mr. Ali reminded the government that the people of Batticaloa were also citizens of this country and urged transport Minister Dulles Allahapperuma to order the railway authorities to take action to stop such violent acts targeting train commuters from the East.
The Parliamentarian said the train carriages were in a dilapidated state.
He said the number of compartments used on the Batticaloa trains had been reduced from 35 to 21.
“The railway earns Rs. 4 lakhs a day on the Eastern line and government can provide more and better compartments on the line,” Mr. Ali said.
