Third platform opened at Peradeniya station
At long last, the proposed third platform at the Peradeniya station has become a reality. The newly constructed platform was commissioned for use on 1st December. The opening of this long proposed third platform will cut train travel by as much as 20 minutes and enable all upcountry trains to stop at Peradeniya.
Previously all upcountry trains that stopped at Peradeniya had to reverse into the station to stop at the second platform and then continue on their travels. Now trains that previously did not stop at the Peradeniya station due to time delays, like the Udarata Menike can now stop at the new platform without causing any undue delay.
The unavailability of the third platform has long been cited as one of the major causes for the bottlenecks on the main line. Passengers can get to the new third platform via the overhead bridge constructed over the little hillock that separates the new platform from the main station.
Sri Lanka Railways hopes to soon solve the remaining major bottleneck on the Upcountry / Main line by laying double tracks between the triangular area of Pilimatalava, Kandy and Gampola. Once this task is completed all major delays on the upcountry line will be solved.
