Kandy triangular railway development to reduce travel time
The Transport Ministry is developing the Kandy-Gampola-Kadugannawa railway line triangle to reduce travel time from Colombo to Kandy by 15-20 minutes.
A Ministry spokesman told the Daily News that arrangements had been made to remove operational barriers on the mainline at Peradeniya while work has commenced to double line of the Kandy-Peradeniya (six Km) line.
It has also been proposed to install an electric network by removing the old signal system and the construction of pavements at Peradeniya. Railway crossing facilities will be provided by constructing additional loop lines at Pilimathalawa and Gelioya. “Work on the passenger pavement in Peradeniya has already been completed,” the spokesman said.
He said work on double line of the Kandy-Peradeniya section has been delayed due to legal action being taken to remove unauthorised occupants.
