A railway union is alleging that certain officials at the Railways Department are trying to defraud 4,55,332 rupees which had been approved for the repair of a train engine. The department had handed over the engine to Dimo Limited for repairs on 15 October 2007 and the company had estimated 4,55,332 rupees for the job.

Even after a year had elapsed, the railways department had still not paid the money to Dimo Ltd. The All Ceylon Railway Workers’ General Union says that this payment is being delayed as some officials at the railways department are trying to defraud the money which had been approved as payment to the company.

The chairman of the union S P Vithanage says that some of the officials visit Dimo Company from time to time under the pretext of inspecting the engine but that no action is being taken on the part of the department to repair the engine.

He said that Dimo is prepared to repair the engine within 5 days, if they receive the payment.

He charged that the department is wasting its resources at a time when a trains are cancelled everyday due to various technical problems with the engines.
