The Sagarika Express Train which was travelling from Matara to Matale through Colombo Fort derailed today at Polkotuwa, Beruwala. Due to the derailment all trains between Colombo Fort and Matara will be significently delayed.

Only the locomotive of the Sagarika train had jumped the tracks and no persons were injured due to the derailment and only minor damage was caused to the carriages and tracks. The Railway Department had immediately deployed a train from Kalutara to Beruwala so that the stranded passengers could continue on with their journey to Galle and Matara.

The Sagarika express train has been regularly derailing on the coastal railway linefor some time now, we hope the railway department will take the necessary steps to rectify the situation.
