Update:  According to the GMR, the tomorrows trial run have been cancelled.

The Sri Lanka Railways will conduct trial runs from Colombo to Anuradhapura on January 16 to test whether the journey could be completed in three hours.

Speaking to the Daily News, Railway Transport Superintendent, Vijaya Samarasinghe said the Department has already conducted two trial runs from Colombo to Anuradhapura to test whether the travel time could be reduced.

Speed restrictions on the Colomo-Anuradhapura line have already removed, he said.

He said that the track maintenance work is done very efficiently and in a systematic manner.

A new Tamping Machine was purchased at a cost of Rs.225 million and this machine will be used to strengthen the track by sleepering and ballasting more efficiently and with less labour. Then the travel time of trains could be reduced by increasing the speed of the trains.

Further, it is expected to remove all speed restrictions below 10km.p.h. and to reduce derailments by 50 percent and train delays by 25 percent.

This would also help to reduce the travel time of trains operated on the Colombo – Anuradhapura line.
