ACREGU want Minister and GM to resign
The All Ceylon Railway Employees’ General Union (ACREGU) is to stage a protest campaign shortly to urge the government to remove Transport Minister Dulles Alahapperuma and General Manager Sri Lanka Railways (SLR), Dr. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan from their posts, ACREGU officials told The Morning Leader.
According to Secretary, ACREGU, Sumathipala Manawadu, Minister Alahapperuma was the ‘most inefficient Railway Minister that the department has ever had’ and added that the present SLR General Manager too is very much similar to the Minister as they have done nothing to uplift the railway and have ‘always worked only towards their personal gain and survival.’
“When Alahapperuma first took over the Ministry in 2005 from Minister A.H.M. Fowzie he promised to vacate his post if he failed to uplift the SLR within one year. Now three years have elapsed since his appointment and he has failed to give a boost to the SLR and is still functioning as the Minister. Likewise, SLR General Manager Dr. Gunaruwan too has failed to carry out a satisfactory job and what the employees want now is to request both the Minister and the GM to tender their resignations,” Manawadu said.
Manawadu further said that if the Minister and the GM don’t tender their resignations immediately they would resort to trade union action very soon which would go on till they are removed from their posts.
Transport Ministry officials were not available for comment.
