Train services collapse as station masters strike
Station masters of the Sri Lanka Railway Department began a two-day strike today disrupting the train service and leaving thousands of train commuters stranded at train stations.
Demanding to resolve the salary problems and other few burning issues the Station Masters Union of Sri Lanka Railway department commenced the two-day strike from last midnight.
K.V Jayasena, the president of the union said they have taken this action demanding to include the implementation of the 6/2006 Salary Circular for station masters, reversing the employment of over 200 station masters who were employed under Class Two from Class Three, the granting of due promotions and also the equal implementation of rules and regulations of the Railways Department on all its employees.
The strike is to conclude by midnight tomorrow, but the station masters warned that they would go for further actions if the authorities fail to meet their demands as quickly as possible.
However the General Manager of Railways, Dr. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan said there is no interruption in train services as they have implemented alternate options to face this strike.
He further said that the salary proposals, compiled after a common consensus, had already been sent to the Salaries Commission.
