At least 208 motor vehicles had crashed through closed gates at protected level crossings last year, the government told Parliament yesterday.

Deputy Transport Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna said ten accidents at level crossings had also resulted in 16 deaths last year, the Minister said.

Speaking during the question time, Mr. Alagiyawanna highlighted the large number of unprotected level crossings.

“Before the Kelaniya flyover was built 75 to 85 incidents of vehicles breaking through the closed gates at the Peliyagoda protected level crossing were reported annually,” he said.

The Minister said Samurdhi recipients had been employed to man unprotected level crossings.
