Three railway employees were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital accident ward with serious injuries when a chain block at the Maligawatta main railway yard fell on them after a train compartment which was under repair hurtled onto it, a railway source said.

One of the employees injured is in a critical condition. A power set had rammed against the compartment before it hit the chain block, source said.

“Initial investigations have found that the power set has been driven without permission or signal to move forward,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Chief Engineer, B. A. P. Ariyaratna said a three member committee has been appointed to look into the accident and the services of the engine driver of the power set and his assistant have been suspended with immediate effect.
