Southern railway service restored following derailment
Train movement along the southern coastal track was restored yesterday morning after the railway service had temporarily been suspended following the derailment of the “Rajarata Rejina” on Saturday.
The train bound for Anuradhapura from Matara derailed somewhere between Ahangama and Weligama around 9.30am on Saturday. A Spokesman for the Railways Nihal Fernandez told Daily Mirror the locomotive and three compartments had derailed but that no major damages to the train had been reported.
As a result of train services connecting Matara and Galle temporarily coming to a halt a railway breakdown and recovery crew was sent to the location where the derailment took place. The recovery crew had managed to get the derailed train back on track and by early morning yesterday normal train services had been restored. Services had to be temporarily suspended as only a single line operates from Colombo to Galle, Mr. Fernandez said.
