A van that had gone down a precipice in Haputale had fallen on to the railroad track and then been struck by a goods train and thrown off the track.

The accident had caused serious injuries to the van driver and heavy damage to the vehicle.  The van had been going down a steep hill on Temple Road, Haputale last afternoon. It had skidded while negotiating a bend.

The driver had lost control as a result, and it had run off the road and gone down a precipice.  The van had fallen about 30 feet on to the railroad track and then been struck by a goods train going from Kandy to Badulla.

An explosion had occurred and the van had caught fire. The driver had been rescued by people in the area who had rushed to the scene.  

The driver was admitted to Badulla hospital in a critical condition.  According to the Badulla Police the driver had lost control of the van and it gone down the precipice as there was no safety railing at the bend.
