Rail bus service launched in East today
The Government will launch a new rail bus service between Batticaloa and Trincomalee in the Eastern Province for the first time under the “Negenahira Navodaya” program.
Sri Lanka Railways’ Commercial Superintendent Vijaya Samarasinghe told the Daily News that th rail bus service will commence today (29) in a bid to strengthen public transport in the Eastern Province.
The rail bus service will be launched by Senor Presidential Adviser and MP Basil Rajapaksa, Indian High Commissioner Alok Prasad and Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma at the Batticaloa Railway station today. Each rail bus comprising eighty seats costs about Rs.6 million. Samarasinghe further said that the Indian Government had granted ten buses to Sri Lanka and requested the Government to be deploy them in the Eastern Province.
Meanwhile, each rail bus will have two buses and the first rail bus will be seen among the Batticaloa-Trincomalee railway fleet to serve the Eastern commuters.
“The other four rail buses are expected to be deployed on the Northern railway track in the near future,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Railway Authority hopes to reduce the travel time with the operation of rail bus service between Batticaloa and Trincomalee.
