Twenty six railway stations to be constructed
The Transport Ministry has succeed in finding sponsors for its flagship project under “Uthuru Mithuru” with twenty six sponsors from the Government and the private sector organizations and companies pledging their support to construct 26 railway stations on the Northern railway line from Omanthai to Kankasanthurai. The project would cost around Rs.400 million.
Speaking to the Daily News,Uthuru Mithuru Project Manager M.J.Premathileke said that the construction work of the Omanthai railway station has already commenced under the sponsorship of Social Services and Social Welfare Ministry and the Swarnavahini Organization. Meanwhile, the restoration of the rail track is in the process from Thandikulam to Omanthai after the land mines were cleared by the Sri Lanka Army.
There was a huge demand from private and government sector organizations to fund for the reconstruction of railway stations on the Northern railway track.
“Therefore, we had to follow the first come and first served basis in allocating stations for the reconstructions,” he said.
Meanwhile, this concept has already received positive acclamation with schoolchildren and teachers across the country mobilizing to construct the Elephant Pass railway station. The project is implemented in collaboration with the Education Ministry and they have already achived the financial target in reconstructing the station. In addition, schoolchildren and teachers have also collected around Rs.2million to restore the Northern line.
Meanwhile, several private companies have also pledged their support to sell tickets to the public through their sales outlets.
The project also ensures that every cent received as contribution is appreciated. It is also formulating the institutional framework to ensure that the contributions are secured, properly administered under the supervision of the Treasury and the utilization scrutinized by the Auditor General.
This will ensure that the contributions made by the general public towards implementation this project for the purpose of rebuilding the country through rebuilding the vital Yal Devi Friendship Railway Track.
