Govt. wasted public funds for railway advertisement
The Organization for the Protection of the Properties and the Rights of Railway Employees (OPPRRE) charged yesterday that the government had used public funds in an improper manner to rebuild the northern railway track.
The Convener of the organization Sumathipala Manawadu told DM that the government had spent around Rs 10 million for the 3 minute TV commercial that featured the northern railway line. He added that the people of the country are aware of the northern railway track and that the government was seeking to build it as soon as possible. The TV commercial was given over to a private advertising firm and around 200 employees were hired for the TV commercial. He also said that a workable locomotive engine, carriages, railway trolleys etc were used in the commercial, which resulted in a goods train having to be stopped as a result. The situation cost the railway millions.
The government spent Rs 1500 per employee per day on accommodation for persons working on the tv commercial at a luxury hotel in Anuradhapura.
However, the government collected a day’s salary from state sector employees to build the northern railway track, Sumathipala Manawadu said.
