More donations for Northern rail track restoration project
Employees of the Ceylon- German Technical Training Institute have donated a day’s salary towards the Uthuru Mithuru flagship project to rebuild the Northern railway track.
Two special donations were also made for the Uthuru Mithuru fund by Lakdiva Engineering Company (Pvt) Ltd and the Wayamba University.
The donations were handed over to Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma by the heads of these establishments at a function at the Transport Ministry recently.
The concept has already received positive responses with Commercial Bank stepping in to construct railway stations on the Northern line, and the Janatha Estate Development Board providing manpower to construct the stations.
Minister Alahapperuma said that he will personally take responsibility for the contributions made by the various State and private sector organizations and the public towards implementation of the project. “Every cent received as contributions will be utilized properly under the supervision of the Treasury,” he said. The Minister was also appreciative of the wider participation of the public in the project which is estimated to cost Rs.18 billion.
Those wanting to contribute to the Uthuru Mithuru project can send their donations to the Taprobane Branch of the Bank of Ceylon, Account No 7041635. The public can also contribute to this flagship project by purchasing a ticket worth at Rs.1,000 available at all railway stations across the country.
