Two luxury Hitachi air-conditioned trains will resume operations from February 1. These trains were under repairs for the past one year by local technicians.

Speaking to The Island, Commercial Superintendent of Sri Lanka Railways, Vijaya Samarasinghe, said that one of these luxury trains could accommodate 60 travellers, while the other could carry 100. Each train will comprise four compartments.

“Reservations have already started. Those possessing Warrants could travel free of charge,” said Samarasinghe yesterday.

He also said that these luxury trains have an air conditioned kitchen, dinning room and all types of communication.

Samarasinghe told The Island that one of these trains is now on trial runs up to Rambukkana on the Up-Country line, but after three months, it will be able to travel to Nanu-Oya and Badulla. These trains will also run upto Matara, Puttalam, Vavuniya, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Batticaloa.

Meanwhile, 10 buses gifted by the Indian government to Sri Lanka, are being modified at the Ratmalana Workshop to be used on rail tracks.

Two of these bus/trains will operate between Batticaloa and Gal-Oya, while the other will be operated in the Trincomalee area. Another will be in the Valaichenai area.
