The railway track from Medawachchiya to Talaimannar is to be re-erected. The Ircon company of India is in charge of construction. Minister Kumara Welgama and the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Ashok K. Khanth signed the relevant agreement at the transport ministry today.
The railway line is to be constructed under two stages from Medawachchiya to Madhu and from Madhu to Talaimannar at a cost of 26.57 billion rupees. The first stage of construction is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Six railway stations are to be constructed. The Indian High Commissioner said reconstruction of the Medawachchiya-Talaimannar railway line is a symbol of the friendship between India and Sri Lanka.
