Sri Lanka Railways has planned to construct a second railway line between Polgahawela and Maho junctions, two main junctions on the railway network .

The development of the dual track line is aimed at easing the traffic on the Northern Line which is being extended up to Kankasanthurai in the Jaffna district.

The Northern Line deviates from the main upcountry line at Polgahawela Junction and at Maho Junction railway line to Batticaloa branches off from the Northern Line.

Between these two junctions, there are only five railway stations for 70 kilometers and this causes delays at interchanging.

The feasibility study for the double line between Polgahawela and Maho is to start soon.

At present, trains are operating up to Omanthai on Northern Line and the government has started the reconstruction of the line destroyed by the terrorists during the war up to Kankasanthurai.

One Response to “Sri Lanka to construct dual track railway line from Polgahawela to Maho”

    1. Janaka Anuruddha Says:

It is a better thing to do, but this should be extended up to the Anuradhapura. Current railway line from maho to Anuradhapuara is in very bad situation and it takes 1.20 hours even for the intercity express train to travel between this small distance. Northern area people are currently traveling via buses and it will be changed in the future due to development of the northern railway line. It is better to do feasibility study from polgahawela to Anurdhapura dual line. because of construction of this line might take 4 5 years to complete. other wise at the time of completion you may need to do another feasibility study for Maho – Anuradhapura dual track.
