Indian Right Company Preferred Over Local Railway Employees

August 18th, 2010

Railway employees are up in arms against the government’s decision to permit Indian Right Company (IRC) to get down 4000 Indian labourers for the Southern coastal railway track upgrading work, All Ceylon Railway Employees General Union (ACREGU) said.

The Indian Right Company (IRC) was awarded the contract for the project on August 1, 2007, allowing them to get down Indian labourers, despite protests by railway employees, Secretary of the ACREGU, Sumathipala Manawadu told The Sunday Leader.

“We are against the government’s decision for awarding the contract to Indian Right Company as we know how they wanted to cheat the Sri Lanka Railways in 2004. They wanted one and a half years to restore the damaged railway track, although the local railway employees restored the line within 52 days,” claimed Manawadu.
