Railway to install gates at unprotected level crossings

The Railway Department yesterday pledged that all unprotected railway crossings countrywide will be installed with gates if necessary funds are released by Local Government authorities. According to Railway higher authorities over 200 railway crossings, especially in the rural areas will have to be installed with either rail gates or signal lights.

Govt. calls bids to buy 15 train engines

Sri Lanka is to purchase 15 locomotive engines to improve the railway service, which has been subjected to heavy criticism recently, for under performance and bureaucratic inefficiency.

Nearly 1,500 employees in the Railway Department who had not been made permanent for the past 15 years will be absorbed into the permanent cadre. The appointment letters will be given by Minister Dullas Allahapperuma at the National Youth Services Council in Maharagama today.

Train hits Dialog Van at Gelioya

A van was hit by a Train at an unprotected level crossing near Gelioya yesterday. One person was killed and three others were injured in the accident. The injured have been admitted to the Kandy Teaching hospital.
